Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)
Mission:
Social science that makes a difference.
Vision:
-
a human and social sciences research council serving as a knowledge hub
-
where public policy and discourse on current and future challenges for South Africa and the African continent are independently researched, analysed and informed, and
-
where research-based solutions to human and social problems are developed.
The HSRC is supporting this project, because:
-
We believe that geo-information can play a significant role in NEPAD and other regional initiatives achieving their objectives.
-
Through our research we have seen the extensive work being done in the geo-information industry in Africa and which needs to be acknowledged and communicated to the rest of the world.
-
This initiative will build on the extensive geo-information networks present in Africa by developing the geo-information industry on the continent and encouraging practitioners and researchers to communicate with one another.
-
There is a gap in presenting geo-information research being done in Africa.
-
Through the use of web technology, communication between the geo-information industry in Africa and internationally can be improved to the benefit of the continent as a whole.
The HSRC is a non-partisan organisation which generates scientific knowledge through its research and analytical work in the social and human sciences. It also provides critical and independent information to different role players, whether in policy development, media analysis, advocacy or in debates so that they can make informed decisions.
The HSRC is aiming to expand its research activities into Africa. The focus of this research expansion is to develop partnerships with national collaborators and to provide them with technical capacity on socio-economic projects where it is required. The project being proposed here will enable the HSRC to position itself even more as a major player in Africa as it will potentially have access to networks and information that will enhance its capacity to fulfill its research mandate on the continent.
