Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to use GIS and he will develop informed, sustainable practices in aquaculture and inland fisheries management.

Aquaculture plays an increasingly important role in the global economy, and fisheries contribute significantly to poverty alleviation and food security. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has worked for decades to promote sustainable aquaculture and fisheries in developing countries. Read more...

Africa worst levels of malnutritionAfrica worst levels of malnutrition
30 May 2008

How bad is the malnutrition situation in Africa? According to UNICEF it is estimated that 120,000 children have less than one month to live in Ethiopia. Several countries in central and western Africa face similar levels of malnutrition as Ethiopia. Some of the interventions that can be implemented to fight malnutrition include appropriate complementary feeding, exclusive breastfeeding, feeding of sick children, women’s nutrition, vitamin A supplements, anaemia reduction, and consumption of iodized salt. Fortification of food is a key intervention and can include the fortification of oil, wheat, and maize flour.

The note produced by the EU Water Initiative emphasises how incomplete the tracking of European donor funds is to African countries, especially at a suitable disaggregated level. Like many West African cities, Senegal's capital city of Dakar has grown dramatically over the past several decades. Growth is expected to continue. While birth rates have begun to decline, natural growth still accounts for much of Dakar's expansion. In addition, Dakar experienced a large rural-to-urban migration beginning in the 1960s, when Senegal suffered from declining precipitation and periods of extreme drought. By 2005, Senegal's urban population exceeded its rural population. By 2030, two-thirds of the country's population is expected to be urban.

Policies and institutional structures are needed to provide equitable access to the water by poor farmers and access to markets. There is also the need to improve water management in rain fed agriculture and investments in water infrastructure. However, farmers also need secure access to inputs including fertilizer, better seeds and credit. Farmers need to be educated in using these inputs and the latest techniques. With the anticipated changes in the climate across Africa, the management of water resources will become that much more critical. Maps are provided in showing the situation in Africa.

About us Read more
The Human Sciences Research Council's (HSRC) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Centre and EIS-AFRICA have decided that it is imperative to develop a geo-information research portal that will ensure the establishment of a forum for a vigorous engagement by African researchers. It is AGIRN's mission to be the premier knowledge portal for Africa's Geoinformation researchers, practitioners and decision-makers where research papers, project findings and policy guidelines to enrich policy debate are published and accessed and to support decision-making through the use of appropriate web-based technologies.
